The Abyss - (התהום)

Book Design
A multi-format book created to experiment with the idea of maturity over time with texts by the authors Charles Bukowski, Shani Boianjiu and David Foster Wallace.

The first format is a small booklet with images taken at a day off in the local park Hayarkon in Tel Aviv. In this shoot, I was in a birthday-balloons suit in order to resemble the naivety of childhood. Typography-wise I wanted to let the letters have a life of their own.

In the second and main format - the book of youth, I wanted to represent the experience of youth in Israel, going through high school and into the impossible reality of mandatory military service. In this format, the images of barren wastelands and forgotten prostitutes taken by the award-winning photographer Nadav Kander were used in coherence with strict typography with only small glitches in the system.

In one of Boianjiu’s chapters, she describes the feelings of a young woman who’s constantly being told by those around her to shut up. In the text, the young woman finds a place to shout all she has to say but I thought it will be the appropriate treatment to print her words on see-through paper to show how her words are still muffled.

The Third and final format is a small and wide booklet that focuses mainly on Foster Wallace's text.
To represent the meaning of adulthood I have broken the paragraphs into numbered rows and treated the text as if it was a preacher’s mass while using very few images.
